There were a lot of disgruntled lords and their men all over the place, not to mention she already knew 30 Protectorate mages were running around loose in the city. And that's just one example.
More bad reviews for the next two books I rather liked the first book in the series, but this book was a bit busy for me. There was a lot of head hopping and I had to re-read a few spots to see "who" was talking. I should've expected this sort of thing since the other book that I read by Cooper did the same thing, but for some reason it was easier for me to follow along in that book compared to this book.
I purchased the version with the first 3 books and put off reading the 3rd book as the 2nd book was sort of hard for me to get throu I rather liked the first book in the series, but this book was a bit busy for me. This second book in the Devan Chronicles is quite a bit better than the first in the series, which was a pleasant surprise. Usually the first book is best to lure in buyers for the subsequent books Not this one, it's quite a bit better in both writing style and character development. The author possibly chose in some cases the wrong characters into which to delve deeper, but overall the people who you expect to be explored more, do indeed get explored more.
I didn't like the way the author skipped a few important interpersonal scenes, however, such as an important fight between the romantically involved main characters, and the attempt at sexual tension seems a little contrived, although it's still cute. I think he is also a little bit obsessed with battle strategy and militarism such that some battle chapters although I liked them might bore a reader who is more interested in the politics and interpersonal stories than the battles.
With that said, I'll keep buying this series because I like the main characters a lot and I think this alternate universe has a lot of potential. One person found this helpful. A solid second book in the Devan Chronicles sees the political conflict and war spread, as the cast of characters and governments of interest grow. Julia is still at the heart of the story, but much of the action occurs elsewhere, as we begin to see major characters in most of the powerful lands become involved with the brewing war.
The emphasis here shifts from the uses of magic to the use of power. Beneath all of this are lingering questions: There are ups and downs, and we see more of the antagonists AND protagonists. The story is richer and far more interesting than the first novel in the series, and I hope that the next in the series is on par with this entry. I could not put it down! It is well written in an easily readable style.
Deva's king is assasinated and it is made to look like murder by another. Conspiracies abound surrounding the new choosing of a king. Julia is at the centre of all the turmoil.
